The GPM P5 Standard for Sustainability in Project Management is a valuable resource for project managers and organizations. The P5 Standard focuses on understanding and managing the potential impacts of your project on the environment, society, and economy. Although its practices are clear and straightforward, we often receive requests for additional context. Therefore, we have launched a 49-part series aimed at dissecting each element of the standard, providing practical explanations one element at a time.
Labor-management relations are a fundamental aspect of the GPM P5 Standard. This element focuses on fostering a harmonious and productive working environment across all levels of the project organization, from project managers to team members. In essence, it's about building trust, understanding, and cooperation among all project stakeholders.
The basis of effective labor-management relations lies in respecting each other's opinions, actively resolving conflicts, communicating clearly, and ensuring that everyone is aware of their roles and responsibilities. The project team should recognize and support both legal and human rights for everyone involved in the project and define and implement approaches for addressing disputes.
Consider a large-scale construction project, like building a new hospital. In this scenario, the project management team (representing the hospital board and the construction company) and the labor unions (representing the construction workers) negotiate a Project Labor Agreement (PLA), which is a pre-hire collective bargaining agreement that sets out the terms and conditions of employment for the duration of the project. It covers areas such as wages, work hours, health and safety standards, dispute resolution mechanisms, and other labor-related issues.
In this example, effective labor-management relations are crucial to the success of the project. Both parties need to work together to ensure the project is completed on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards. They also need to resolve any disputes or conflicts that arise quickly and amicably to prevent delays or disruptions to the project.
This collaboration and mutual respect between labor and management contribute to a positive working environment, which can boost worker morale and productivity. Moreover, it can enhance the reputation of the construction company and the hospital board, making them more attractive to potential employees and partners in the future.

When we talk about employment and staffing in the P5 standard, we outline practices you need to do to support your team from a sustainability standpoint. That includes everyone from the top dogs, like the project steering committee, right down to every member of the project team, including contractors. You've got to figure out what skills you need for your project, find the right people, manage their work and time, give them any training they need, and ensure they're getting paid fairly.
Imagine you're running a project to build a sustainable housing development. You'd need to consider what skills you need on your team. You might need architects who know their way around sustainable design, construction workers who are pros at using eco-friendly building materials, and project managers who are clued up on sustainability standards and practice.
Maybe these people are already in your organization, or maybe you need to look outside. When you're hiring, it's important to let people know that your project is all about sustainability and what kind of skills and experience you're looking for.
Once you've established your team, you need to manage them. This means making sure everyone knows what they're supposed to be doing and when, checking in regularly to see how they're going, and giving them feedback and tips to help them do their best.
Training is also a big deal in the P5 standard. In our example, you might need to teach your team about the specific sustainable building techniques you're going to use, or about the P5 standard itself so everyone's on the same page about your sustainability goals, how to measure impacts and develop a sustainability management plan to track interventions.
Last but not least, you need to make sure everyone's getting paid fairly. This is not only good for keeping your team happy and motivated, but it also fits with the P5 standard's focus on fair labor practices.
Hiring Based on Bias: This practice involves making hiring decisions based on personal biases or preferences rather than an applicant's qualifications or skills. This could manifest as favoring candidates from certain universities, backgrounds, or those who share similar interests or experiences, which can lead to a lack of diversity and inclusivity in the workplace.
Neglecting Employee Development: Failing to invest in employee development and growth is another unsustainable hiring practice. Organizations that don't provide opportunities for skill development or career advancement are likely to face high turnover rates, as employees may feel undervalued and unfulfilled.
Inadequate Compensation: Offering below-market salaries or inadequate benefits packages is a short-sighted and unsustainable practice. While it might save costs in the short term, it can lead to high employee turnover, low morale, and difficulty attracting and retaining top talent in the long term.

The prosperity category of the GPM P5 Standard focuses on maximizing positive returns for as many stakeholders as possible. Therefore, it is critical to consider the economic impacts of a project on the local community.
In the P5 Standard, we describe Local Economic Impact (from a project context) as "the direct and indirect effects the project has on the economy of its local area. This can include job creation, increased spending in the local economy, or increased regional development."When a project is developed in a local area, it can bring about several positive economic impacts for the local community. One of the most significant benefits is the creation of job opportunities. The development of a project in an area will require a workforce to complete various tasks, such as construction and maintenance. This can provide employment opportunities for the local community, improving the living standards of people in the area.
Another significant positive impact a project can bring to a local community is an increase in revenue. When a project is developed, it can attract tourists and other visitors. This can lead to increased spending in the local economy, resulting in a positive economic impact. Also, when a project is developed, it can increase property values in the area. This can benefit homeowners in the area, as they can sell their properties at higher prices.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been hailed as a solution to many of humanity's problems.
Over the last six months, the amount of posts, podcasts, articles, and talks on AI has increased exponentially. I get it. AI is revolutionary, it is cool, it is changing things. but the growing focus on AI and how it will disrupt our profession has the potential to distract from pressing issues like climate change and biodiversity loss. These two issues alone pose an existential threat to our planet and our ability to live on it. We have a responsibility to prioritize solutions and methods that address them. Spoiler alert: we provide that in this article.The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) has reported that global populations of mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles, and fish have declined by 68% since 1970. Another study published in the journal Nature states that over one million species are at risk of extinction, with the rate of species extinction hundreds of times higher than in the past. These alarming statistics highlight the urgency of addressing the biodiversity crisis.
At the same time, climate change poses a severe threat to our planet. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports that global temperatures have increased by 1°C above pre-industrial levels. Unless we take action, the earth could warm by 3-4°C by the end of the century, leading to more frequent and intense heatwaves, storms, floods, droughts, and rising sea levels. With this year's El Nino, we could see the first
Forecasters predict that 2024 could be the year humanity surpasses 1.5 degrees Celsius due to the lagged effect of the peak impact of El Nino in December that takes time to spread globally.The development of AI continues to receive exponential focus, funding and is clogging up our news feeds. While AI has the potential to improve healthcare, transportation, and various industries' efficiency, we must not lose focus on sustainability.
Example, self-driving cars are marketed as environmentally friendly and reducing emissions. However, they do not address the root causes of climate change and allow us to continue using fossil fuels for transportation. Similarly, AI can help farmers optimize their crops and increase yields, but it does not address the fundamental issue of monoculture farming, which depletes soil nutrients and reduces biodiversity.
Developing AI requires vast amounts of energy. According to a report by the University of Massachusetts Amherst, training a single large AI model can emit as much carbon dioxide as five cars during their entire lifetime. Moreover, data centers that support AI require vast amounts of electricity, consuming up to 3% of global electricity demand, with that figure expected to triple by 2030.
As we continue to develop AI technology, it is crucial to consider its long-term implications carefully. We must ensure that the energy sources used to power AI are sustainable and do not exacerbate climate change. Additionally, we must focus on developing AI applications that support sustainable practices in various industries, rather than promoting their use as a replacement for sustainable solutions.
Sustainability should be a top priority as we continue to leverage AI technology. We must not allow the exponential growth of AI to distract us from the urgent issues that require immediate attention. As a society, we must acknowledge the interconnectedness of these issues and approach them holistically, considering their long-term impact on future generations.
While AI has the potential to revolutionize various industries, we can’t not forget our obligations to sustainability. We must prioritize the development of sustainable AI solutions that do not contribute to environmental degradation, but instead support the transition towards a sustainable future. It is only by doing so that we can ensure a healthy planet for ourselves and future generations.
Responsible technology is the practice of taking into account ethical, legal, and social implications when running projects that involve new or emerging technologies. This includes developing and adhering to frameworks and policies related to data privacy, intellectual property rights, environmental impact, diversity, and inclusion. This is the 5th installment in our series on Sustainable Project Management Principles. As project managers, it's crucial to consider the social and ecological equity principle when planning and executing projects in ecologically sensitive areas and centers of population. [In 2023, this essentially means on earth].
Social and ecological equity refers to the fair distribution of environmental benefits and burdens across different groups of people, taking into account social and demographic factors that influence vulnerability.
Imagine you are a project manager for a construction project in a coastal area vulnerable to flooding and sea-level rise due to climate change (see Miami, Florida). Social and ecological equity would require you to consider the demographics of the local population, such as age, income, education level, and access to resources like healthcare and transportation, to understand which groups are most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.
By understanding the demographic dynamics of the local population, you can design your project to minimize negative impacts on vulnerable groups and maximize benefits for those who need them most. This might involve designing buildings to be more resilient to flooding and storms or providing alternative transportation options for low-income residents who may not own cars.
Another example of social and ecological equity in action is a renewable energy project in a rural community. In this case, the project manager would need to consider the social and economic dynamics of the community, such as income levels, access to job opportunities, and potential impacts on local ecosystems.
By engaging with the local community and understanding their needs and concerns, the project manager can design the project to benefit all stakeholders while minimizing negative impacts. This might involve partnering with local businesses to create job opportunities or implementing sustainable land-use practices to protect local ecosystems.
When we ignore social and ecological equity in project management, it can have negative impacts on vulnerable groups and the environment. Here are some real-world examples of what can happen when social and ecological equity is not taken into account:
Environmental racism [Yes, I said it.] When projects are planned and executed without considering the demographics and vulnerabilities of local populations, it can lead to environmental racism. For example, low-income communities and communities of color are often disproportionately impacted by pollution and other environmental hazards.One example of environmental racism is the Flint water crisis. In this case, officials failed to consider the demographic dynamics of the predominantly Black and low-income community, resulting in contaminated drinking water that led to serious health issues for residents.
Habitat destruction Projects that prioritize economic development over ecological preservation can result in habitat destruction and loss of biodiversity. For example, deforestation for agriculture or mining can lead to loss of habitat for endangered species and disruption of ecosystems.One example of habitat destruction is the Amazon rainforest, which is being rapidly cleared for agriculture and other development projects. This has led to loss of biodiversity and displacement of indigenous communities who rely on the rainforest for their livelihoods.
Climate change impacts Projects that ignore the impacts of climate change on vulnerable populations can lead to increased risks of natural disasters and other climate-related impacts. For example, building infrastructure in coastal areas without considering sea-level rise can lead to flooding and property damage.One example of climate change impacts is Hurricane Katrina, which disproportionately impacted low-income communities and communities of color in New Orleans due to inadequate evacuation procedures and infrastructure.
